Zanzibar is an idyllic island off the coast of Tanzania in Eastern Africa known for its stunning beaches, rich culture, and diverse marine life. Whether you’re an adventure seeker or simply looking to unwind, there’s something for everyone on this tropical paradise. There is so much to experience – I stayed for 10 days and still feel like I could go back for another 10 days and experience a completely new set of things & places I didn’t get to on my first trip

Bonus: If you aren’t wanting to read through my entire list of Zanzibar activities – these links are all my favorite things I did when I was in Zanzibar – as an easy reference!

Visit Mnemba Island

Take a day trip to nearby Mnemba Island for snorkeling and diving: Mnemba Island is a marine reserve located off the northeast coast of Zanzibar, known for its clear waters and abundant marine life. Take a day trip from Zanzibar and explore the coral reefs, relax on the beach and spot tropical fish.

Explore the underwater world on a scuba diving tour

Speaking of activities on the water – there are some AMAZING spots to go Scuba Diving too! Zanzibar’s waters are home to a diverse range of marine life, including colorful coral reefs, tropical fish, and even dolphins and turtles. Join a scuba diving tour and explore the underwater world with an experienced guide.

jozani-forest-monkeys-best-things-to-do-zanizibar

Visit Jozani Forest

Jozani Forest is a nature reserve that’s home to the rare red colobus monkey, as well as other wildlife like bush babies and Sykes’ monkeys. I visited with just a taxi driver and expected to explore on my own but they actually have guides that take you around. I was paired up with a french family and the guide took us all around looking for different wildlife. There are a bunch of things you can see here but I was most interested in the monkeys! Surprisingly we spotted monkeys within 5 minutes of walking into the forest.

This is definitely something you should do but isn’t something you need to book ahead of time – just get a driver or taxi to take you there and back and you can pay at the gate. No reservations are needed. If you want to go to both Jozani Forest & The Rock Restaurant I WOULD book this tour – it’s about the same price as what a taxi is going to cost and includes a tour guide.

what is a sunset dhow cruise boat in zanzibar

Take a Dhow Cruise

A dhow is a traditional wooden boat used for fishing and transportation in Zanzibar. Take a sunset cruise on a dhow and watch the colors of the sky change over the Indian Ocean. It was one of my favorite relaxing things I did in Zanzibar.

You can find these cruises online for $70+ and Im here to tell you that you don’t need to pay that much. What you need to do is go walk down on Nungwi beach and find the boats – they’ll be near the Italian restaurant called Mama Mia and I only spent 20k on my cruise. Just wear a bathing suit and be prepared to get wet when getting on the boat.

Visit Prison Island

Prison Island is a small island off the coast of Zanzibar that was once used as a detention center for slaves. Today, it’s home to giant tortoises and a popular spot for snorkeling and swimming.

This Prison Island + Stone Town Tour is the best bang for your buck plus was one of my favorite tours and it covers both Prison Island, a Spice Farm and Stone Town in one day.

zanzibar-best-things-to-do-mjejane

Visit the ruins of the Maruhubi Palace and learn about Zanzibar’s history of slavery

Maruhubi Palace is a historical site located on the outskirts of Stone Town. You can visit to learn about Zanzibars history of slavery. Once a palace of the Sultan of Zanzibar, it was later used as a detention center for slaves. Visit the ruins and learn about Zanzibar’s complex history of slavery. I did not do this when I visited Zanzibar but it did come highly recommended by a few people that are interested in history. I am more of a beach + island girl so it was low on my list of things to do.

Take a yoga class on the beach

Zanzibar’s stunning beaches provide the perfect backdrop for a relaxing yoga class. Join a local yoga instructor for a session on the beach, surrounded by palm trees and turquoise waters.

Go on a traditional ngalawa boat ride and explore the coastline

Ngalawa boats are traditional wooden boats used by local fishermen. Join a guided tour and explore the coastline, stopping at secluded beaches and snorkeling spots along the way.

Visit the Darajani Market and sample local foods and spices: Darajani Market is Zanzibar’s largest market, known for its colorful stalls selling fresh fruits, vegetables, spices, and local crafts. Take a guided tour of the market and sample traditional Zanzibari foods such as Zanzibar pizza and cassava chips.

Attend a traditional Taarab music performance at the Dhow Countries Music Academy: Taarab is a traditional form of music in Zanzibar, influenced by Arabic, Indian, and African cultures. The Dhow Countries Music Academy is a cultural center dedicated to the preservation of traditional music in Zanzibar. Attend a Taarab performance and immerse yourself in the rich cultural heritage of the island.

Explore Historic Stone Town

No trip to Zanzibar is complete without a visit to Stone Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Wander through the narrow alleys and admire the intricate architecture, then visit the House of Wonders to learn about the island’s rich culture and history. The best way to make use of your time is to combine this with a Spice Farm & Prison Island all in one day on this Full Day Tour of Stone Town + Prison Island.

Eat Local Authetic Food

You’ll find there are SO many amazing places to eat in Zanzibar but one thing you must try is the local cuisine! If you’re staying in or near Nungwi – Mama Africa. The food is AMAZING. The Chipati was my favorite but also trying Ugali here was also a treat. In Stone Town you need to try Lukaan which is swahili cuisine. Go early as its e cafeteria style so the good thigns go first for dinner. If your back is to Lukmaan and you turn left – just down the street from Lukmaan, also on New Mkunazini Road there is an amazing street food vendor called T&B BBQ Restaurant with spicy chicken and garlic naan. T&B is also a great place to eat in Stone Town!

Go on a Spice Tour

Zanzibar is famous for its spices and herbs, and a spice tour is the perfect way to learn about the island’s aromatic treasures. Visit local farms and plantations to see cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and other spices in their natural habitat. Its one of the top things to do in Zanzibar and there are many tour options but this combo tour that covers Stone Town & Prison Island should be the one you check out.

Relax on the Beaches

Zanzibar is home to some of the world’s most beautiful beaches, including Nungwi, Kendwa, and Paje. Spend a day soaking up the sun, swimming in the crystal-clear waters, and sipping cocktails under a palm tree. We only

Try Kite Surfing or Wind Surfing

Zanzibar’s clear waters and steady winds make it an ideal destination for water sports like kite surfing and wind surfing. Take a lesson from a local instructor and ride the waves like a pro.

Visit Chumbe Island Coral Park

Chumbe Island Coral Park is a marine protected area that’s home to over 400 species of fish and coral. Take a day trip to this eco-tourism hotspot for snorkeling, kayaking, and guided tours of the island’s unique ecosystem.

Explore the Old Fort and Arts and Crafts Market

The Old Fort is a historic fortification that’s now home to an arts and crafts market. Browse local goods like woven baskets, beaded jewelry, and traditional clothing, then stop for a cup of spiced tea at a nearby café.
Whether you’re interested in history, nature, or adventure, Zanzibar has something to offer every traveler. Make sure these top attractions are on your itinerary for an unforgettable island getaway.

Visit the House of Wonders

The House of Wonders is a must-see museum dedicated to Zanzibar’s culture and history. Explore the exhibits and artifacts, then climb to the rooftop for a stunning view of Stone Town and the Indian Ocean.

10 Travel Tips for Zanzibar: Know BEFORE You Go

Are headed to Zanzibar? The gorgeous island of Tanzania that occasionally is deemed the Maldives of Africa? After spending 10 days in Zanzibar these are 10 things that I wish I had known ahead of time – so you’re trip will be even better then mine.

1 | The island Is Huge

When you’re looking at taking a trip to Zanzibar you’ll probably find 10 to 20 different activities and things to do and you’re going to want to do them all. At least I did! The big thing about the island is that these activities are all over the island and very spread apart. Getting around the island can be somewhat challenging too so if you are staying for 5 or 7 days I’d recommend picking 2 spots only and planning your holiday strategically from these two spots so you can go on all the excursions that you want to! For example – I wouldn’t do the Blu Safari activity from Nungwi but I would do it from Stone Town or Paje. If you’re looking for things to do in Zanzibar, These are my top 10 favorite activities in Zanzibar and what parts of the island I’d do them all from.

The Rock Restaurant in Zanzibar is rated one of the best restaurants in zanzibar

2 | Taxi’s

Taxis are a common form of transportation in Zanzibar, and they can be found all over the island. When taking a taxi, it’s important to negotiate the price before getting in, as there are no meters. It’s also a good idea to ask your hotel or a local for an estimate of what a fair price should be, as some taxi drivers may try to overcharge tourists. Additionally, be sure to clarify the currency you will be paying in, as some drivers may try to charge in US dollars instead of Tanzanian shillings, which is the local currency. If you go through the hotels for all your taxis they will upcharge each one. For a $45 taxi ride I was charged $60 by the hotel – for what should have been a $10 taxi I was charged $20 by the hotel. Its a convenience fee essentially. So I highly recommend getting a few drivers numbers and working with them directly.

From the airport you can expect to pay $45 usd each way to Paje, Nungwi, Jamibani or Kendwa. From Kendwa to Paje you can expect to pay $70. For a day trip to the Jozani forest from Paje you can expect to pay $30 Round Trip. The great thing is these taxis hold 6 people so you can split this cost amongst your group to make it more affordable if you aren’t traveling solo.

3 | The Beaches of Zanzibar

The Beaches are the main reason most come to Zanzibar! If you are looking for the BEST beaches in Zanzibar then I’m here to tell you that I think the best beaches are Kendwa and Nungwi. There are many other beaches in Zanzibar but many of them have large coral reefs and with that sea urchins so they aren’t as swimable.

In Kendwa you’ll find amazing crystal blue water and white sand beaches. While it is the busiest & most popular beach Its one of the most beautiful. My second favorite beach but first favorite area to stay in was Nungwi. Nungwi beach at the very north end has some seaweed issues but around the southern part there is no seaweed and some amazing restaurants.

All beaches in Zanzibar suffer from low tide everyday so when you read about that, dont expect to find any one beach that is perfect at every part of the day. Low Tide is generally in the AM and the water goes out VERY far leaving a much larger sandy area that is almost 1/2 KM wide.
My biggest Tip for Traveling in Zanzibar is pick 2 locations and take day trips from there. I did 4 locations in 10 days so I could learn more about the country but I think 2 locations for a 5 – 10 day holiday is for the best.

4 | Clothing Tips for Zanzibar

In most areas of Zanzibar wearing your bathing suit and a cover up is totally normal – especially on the beaches. The one place where I wish I was wearing something a bit more covered up is in Stone Town. I had a dress on that had a bit of cleavage and the girls a bit too exposed to be walking around. Zanzibar is predominately muslim and as an avid traveler I do like to respect the local customs so there was 1 day where I felt underdressed. You will see plenty of tourists walking around in shorts and t-shirts without a care in the world but as a solo female traveler in Zanzibar that was the 1 day I wish I had adjusted my outfit. So if you plan on spending any time in Stone Town when you visit Zanzibar then I highly recommend packing a dress that covers your knees and chest so you have the option to cover up if you want to.

5 | The People

I didnt meet an unkind person in Zanzibar. 99% of the people were very nice, helpful and the essence of “Caribu” or Welcome was everywhere I went. You will run into A LOT of locals offering tours on the beach and as they aren’t official tour guides I’d highly recommend not going with them. Tourism is a big part of the Zanzibar economy so most of the non-official tour guide prices are lower but from experience just not as nice as something from an actual licensed company. The one time I went with a non-official tour company the whole trip unsafe and low key a disaster.

I will say that the only interaction I didn’t particularly enjoy was in Stone Town. As a solo female traveler there were several men that were overly-inquisitive from wanting to walk with me places to asking if I wanted to get married! I did have to stop at one point and be direct and tell a man I wanted to walk by myself. He was nice about it and honestly was more interested in making money & giving me a tour but I had to be firm and tell him good night so he’d walk the other way. I never felt unsafe walking around by myself at any point, even with that interaction.

6 | Food in Zanzibar

When you visit Zanzibar you HAVE to try the local cuisine! My favorite item I tried was called Chapati. If I were to explain it I’d call it a savory pancake almost pita-bread like. My two favorite local restaurants were Mama Africa in Nungwi and a cafeteria-esk restaurant called La in Stone Town. I highly recommend trying both out! I also ate at Mama Mia an italian restaurant in Nungwi and the food was pretty decent. My final restaurant I’d recommend would be The Rock – its on the top of most “Top 10 restaurants in Zanzibar” lists. While I enjoyed the experience + the view, I think I liked the idea of it over the food. I found the food just average & semi-bland as did many people around me, there were lots of calls for salt & pepper as food as brought to tables.

Trip cancellation, emergency medical, and flight!

7 | Water in Zanzibar

LIke many other countries in Africa – the tap water in Zanzibar is not safe to drink, as it may contain harmful bacteria and parasites that can cause illnesses. Therefore, it’s essential to always drink bottled water or filtered water during your stay. Every hotel I stayed at in Zanzibar gave two free bottles of water everyday. I would also recommend only brushing your teeth with bottled water as well.

a view from the blu safari in zanzibar one of the best activities in zanzibar

8| How to Get around Zanzibar

Zanzibar is a relatively small island, and there are a few options for getting around. Taxis are the most convenient as I mentioned above. They can be expensive if you’re traveling long distances by yourself or moving around pretty frequently. Alternatively, you can use the local daladala minibuses, which are a more affordable option, but they can be crowded and uncomfortable and are more of a locals way to travel around.

Many tourists also choose to rent a scooter or motorbike, which can give you more freedom to explore the island at your own pace. However, it’s important to note that traffic in Zanzibar can be chaotic, and road conditions can be poor in some areas, so it’s important to drive with caution.

Walking is a great way to explore the narrow streets of Stone Town, the island’s historic center, but it may not be practical for longer distances. Whatever mode of transportation you choose, be sure to plan ahead, stay safe, and enjoy the stunning scenery and unique culture of Zanzibar.

9 | Money & Currency Tips for Zanzibar

This is one place in the world where I would recommend everyone have a good amount of cash on them. There are ATM’s in Zanzibar – I found them in Nungwi, at the ZNZ airport & in Paje. I never had issues getting money but I did run into one ATM that was empty one day while the one next to it was full. The island runs off of USD and Tanzania Shillings as well so you can use a combo of both. Hotels accept cards but they all charge a 4% fee on top of your bill. Taxis only accept cash & most restaurants only accept cash. I would say about 20% of the restaurants I ate it accepted cards. I ate dinner outside the hotel most days, with meals & activities everyday I budgeted for at least $100/usd each day. Obviously this depends where you’re eating and what activities you’re doing each day.

10 | Culture & Clothing in Zanzibar

You’ll notice as soon as you arrive at the airport that the majority of Zanzibar are muslim and with that more conservative. I believe i read that 90% of the country is muslim. In most muslim countries I like to bring outfits that cover shoulders & knees – like in Egypt. While I was in Zanzibar though I was in my bathing suit on the beach or walking around in a sundress on the beaches in Zanzibar. There was only 1 point where I felt under dressed and that was in Stone Town. I felt the stares as I walked around in a dress and it was the only point where I wished I’d worn a bit longer dress. Again – I never felt unsafe but I did wish I had a bit more clothing on. You will notice that most people are wearing shorts and t-shirts and not bothered by the looks. If you are one that likes to dress according to local customs I’d throw in at least 1 more conservative outfit for a day in Stone Town.

With these tips for Zanzibar & my favorite Activities of Zanzibar guide you’re bound to have an absolutely amazing time in Zanzibar. It was one of my favorite beach vacations I’ve taken in awhile and I cant wait to go back.

The Best 6 Days in Cabo Mexico: An Itinerary for a Memorable Vacation

Cabo San Lucas is a popular vacation destination that attracts millions of visitors each year. With its stunning beaches, breathtaking landscapes, and exciting activities, it’s no wonder why. But with so much to see and do, planning your trip to Cabo can be overwhelming. That’s why we’ve put together this itinerary for the best 6 days in Cabo Mexico, to help you make the most of your vacation and create unforgettable memories.

How to get around Cabo Mexico

There are many options for transportation in Cabo. Uber works great but you cant call Ubers onto most resorts – they have agreements with the taxi’s in the area to only allow taxis on property. If I am staying at the marina I just walk to the closets pickup point and grab a Uber with no issues. Taxi’s around town will cost you about $2-5 usd person/way, depending how far you’re trying to go. Taxi’s to the airport cost about $75 each way for up to 4 people. I personally dislike the taxi’s in Cabo and will always go with private transportation that I’ve set up in person. Which I can break down how to find these people below. Taxi’s are running a monopoly in Mexico, they’re corrupt and overpriced.

How to get to your hotel in Cabo Mexico

I personally ALWAYS set up private transportation when I’m headed to Cabo Mexico. There are lots of options on Viator but these two options below are the ones I’ve used and loved. They communicate well and are always on time. This Company is who I used when I traveled solo. Theyre the least expensive option and I also got the drivers number and contacted him on WhatsApp to set up more transportation when we wanted to go to Flora Farms. They are very easy to use. The second option is This Cabo Transportation Company. The only difference is price, both were extremely professional so I’d recommend either when you’re booking transportation to or from the airport.

Hotels in Cabo Mexico

Having stayed at 4 different hotels in Cabo now theres only 1 resort that I would recommend and thats Breathless. They’re an all-inclusive & adults only plus they’re on the marina so they are walking distance to everything thats fun in the downtown Cabo Area and the facilities are actually very nice. If you’re considering other hotels because of the “being on the beach” aspect, most beaches aren’t even swimmable in Cabo and you’re going to be in the pools at them anyways. Breathless offers beach views & marina views so you have your pick on rooms.

I’ve stayed at several hotels/resorts in Cabo where the photos look amazing online but they’re dated in person – I dont feel that way with Breathless. I also love that they’re part of World of Hyatt now so you can use your credit card or Hyatt points towards your stay. You can book direct with Hyatt or if you have credits/status on Booking.com they’re also a Booking.com property too.

Day 1: Arrival an Exploring Cabo San Lucas

Upon arrival in Cabo San Lucas, check into your hotel and take some time to settle in. After freshening up, head out and explore the city. If you booked the hotel I suggested above then you’re right on the marina near everything thats fun. Go take a stroll along the Marina, where you can admire the beautiful yachts and enjoy the lively atmosphere. Stop by the Oxxo to stock up on waters & snacks (if you aren’t doing All-Inclusive) – its their version of 7-11. Cabo is super walkable and very safe so be sure you go explore today.

In the evening, grab dinner at one of the many restaurants in the area, and be sure to try some traditional Mexican cuisine and perhaps a margarita or two! Some of my favorite restaurants in Cabo are The Office on The Beach, Tiki Bar for Sushi (they have a happy hour), and Cabo Cantina. Mi Casa and Panchos are also good but a bit further walk. If you’re looking for tacos and are up for a bit of a walk – there is a fun taco stand thats open until 2am thats called El Gran Pastor, tacos are only $2 each here – its cash only.

Day 2: ATV Adventure

Get your adrenaline pumping with an ATV adventure through the desert, taking in the breathtaking scenery of the Baja California Peninsula. An ATV tour is a fun and exciting way to explore the natural beauty of the region, and it’s also a great way to get some exercise. With an experienced guide leading the way, you’ll be able to take in the stunning views while having an unforgettable experience.

Ive been ATV’ing in many parts of the world and with different companies in Cabo – I absolutely love my experience I had in Cabo last time with this company. They offer pickup/drop off and the tour is just SO much fun. They even offer a UTV option if you aren’t comfortable with everyone in your family/party driving. The views are unmatched and you come back dusty but having an absolute blast. Everyone I’ve sent on this ATV Tour in Cabo comes back with glowing reviews.

Day 3: Snorkeling and Beach Day

Get ready for a day of adventure and relaxation! Take a snorkeling excursion to see the incredible marine life in Cabo’s waters, including colorful fish, sea lions, and even a variety of sea turtles. Snorkeling is a great way to get up close and personal with the marine life, and it’s an activity that both kids and adults will enjoy. After snorkeling, spend the afternoon relaxing on one of Cabo’s beautiful beaches, where you can soak up the sun and swim in the crystal-clear waters. You can take a $10 water taxi to Lovers Beach and hang out there for the day, its connected to the un-swimmable Divorce Beach.

If snorkeling at Chileno bay doesn’t sound fun or you did it on your boat day previously – check out snorkeling at Cabo Pulmo. This area is hit or miss in the winter (if you come during whale watching season) but in the summer its one of the best places to snorkel in all of Cabo. It is a 2.5 hour drive each way from Cabo San Lucas but its the best Snorkeling in all of Cabo and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It’s also one of the few places where you can snorkel & swim with sea lions that aren’t aggressive!

Day 4: Whale Watching, Boats & Hike Mount Solmar

Wake up early and head to Mt Solmar to go on a hike. Its the highest point in Cabo and you can see all the landscapes on both the Sea of Cortez side & the Pacific Ocean Side.

Whale watching is a must-do while in Cabo! If you come during the whale watching season then you absolutely need to get out on a boat. Whale watching season starts mid December and ends mid April. It’s the perfect way to get up close and personal with these magnificent creatures. Every winter, gray whales migrate to the waters of Cabo to mate and give birth, making this the perfect time to witness their incredible journeys. Whether you’re a seasoned whale watcher or a first-timer, this is an experience that you won’t forget.

We prefer to go out “luxury whale watching” on a catamaran because it includes open bar, the boat has a bathroom and life jackets are optional – this is the Whale watching tour we took.

Day 5: Relaxation and Pampering

Take a well-deserved break and spend the day relaxing and being pampered. Treat yourself to a spa day, where you can enjoy a massage, a facial, or a soak in the hot tub. Many hotels have spas but my favorite place to get a massage is at the Sand Bar. Its right on the ocean and you can hear the waves crash Or, simply lounge by the pool or on the beach and soak up the sun. This is the perfect day to recharge and rejuvenate before your final day in Cabo.

Alternatively – if you’re looking for more adventure, go to La Paz today and go swimming with whale sharks! This is a FULL Day adventure so be ready to not get back until 8pm tonight but it is such a cool experience. If you need transportation this Whale Shark tour will take you there and back but if you have your own car you should check out this tour, its one of the highest rated ones and came recommended by friends that did it (we didn’t have a car when we went in Cabo).

Day 6: Farewell to Cabo

Before departing, take a final stroll along the Marina and do some souvenir shopping. Pick up a few items to remember your incredible trip to Cabo Mexico, and be sure to grab a bite to eat at one of the many restaurants in the area. My favorite gifts to buy are hot sauces and Mexican vanilla, I also love bringing home Tequila to my friends – chocolate tequila is delicious. and always a hit. There are plenty of shops that offer free tequila tastings so skip buying a tequlia tasting online before you get into town.

When it comes to shopping the best areas are off the main marina strip – my favorite store is right next to Panchos Restaurant and very walkable from Breathless Hotel. The staff there is super chill, lets you check things out without bothering you and the prices are always decent without having to haggle for 30 minutes per purchase.

You’re going to find the best prices on things when the cruise ships aren’t in town (prices are always higher when they’re here). You might even notice the stalls that didn’t have prices one day will have pricing the next day – they do that when the cruise ships are docked to make more money off the people with limited time.

With its beautiful beaches, exciting activities, and friendly people, Cabo is sure to leave a lasting impression and have you planning your next trip back in no time.

The Ultimate 10 Day Greece Itinerary

Greece is a country rich in history, culture, and natural beauty. With a 10-day itinerary, you can explore the best of what Greece has to offer, from the ancient ruins of Athens to the stunning beaches of the Greek islands. Before you go, it’s important to understand how to get to Greece and how to get around once you’re there.

Getting to Greece

The main international airports in Greece are Athens International Airport, Thessaloniki International Airport and Heraklion International Airport. These airports are well connected to major European cities, and from there you can take a domestic flight to explore the rest of the country. If you’re following my itinerary and coming to Athens first you’ll fly into ATH airport. If you’re trying to figure out flights still I highly recommend using the tools on Kayak.com – they have price alert tools that you can use to track your prices and pull the trigger on your flight at the lowest price. From the Athens Airport you have 3 choices to get to the city center: The Metro, A private shuttle or a taxi. The Metro in Greece is very clean and easy to use.

Getting Around Greece

Greece has a well-developed public transportation system, including buses and trains, but for the most flexibility, renting a car or an ATV may be the best option. When you first arrive and you’re figuring out how to get to your hotel, the Metro is the cheapest option – I use google maps to get around on it.

If you are too tired to do the Metro then a taxi is my suggested way. They only accept cash so be sure you pull some out at the ATM. There is a taxi line outside Door 2 and they all speak english so just let them know what hotel you’re headed to and they’ll start the meter. Meters are a new thing for Athens Taxi’s too, they used to be a standard rate. If you’re headed towards my favorite hotel in Greece – The Athens Gate, expect to spend 50-60 euros.

If you aren’t a fan of taxi’s you can just as easily book a private shuttle that will pick you up from the airport and drive you straight to your hotel. This is great for larger groups or families (3+ peope) because you can get all sizes of vehicles. I have used this particular shuttle in the past and the drivers were great.

Keep in mind that if you plan to rent a car or ATV, you will need an international driver’s license. Another option is to use Uber or Taxis, they are widely available in major cities and tourist destinations.

How does the Ferry system work?

The Greek islands are connected by ferry, which is a great way to travel between the islands. The ferries are relatively frequent, and the schedule is easy to find online. I use the website Ferryhopper.com to research, schedule and book all my ferries – they even have an app so you can scan your tickets before boarding the ferry instead of printing them out.

Wifi & Staying Connected while in Greece

If you don’t want to pay the $10/day that AT&T and Verizon both offer for their international passes you should check out my favorite App, its called Airalo and it gives you an e-sim card that works everywhere in Greece. You can use code Rachel965 to save you $3 on your first purchase. I literally use it in almost every single country I travel to. It gives me instant connection as soon as I land. Also the new iPhone 14’s sold in the USA dont even accept physical sim cards anymore! There is a highlight on my Instagram Bio that you can check out if you want more information on Airalo.

Day 1: Land in Athens and Explore the City

Start your Greek adventure by landing in Athens, the capital city of Greece. The city is home to some of the most iconic landmarks of the ancient world. If you land early enough you have time to start exploring. First on your itinerary should be a visit to the Acropolis and the Parthenon – I would save this for first thing on Day 2 because it is 10 degrees hotter at the top then down in the streets.

The Acropolis is an ancient citadel that sits high above the city and the Parthenon, a temple dedicated to the goddess Athena, is the most famous structure on the Acropolis. These landmarks are must-see attractions for anyone visiting Athens. Make sure you walk, shop and eat your way through Plaka while youre in Athens too.  I actually wrote a full guide on what you should do in a very busy 1 day in Athens that you can check out too.

Day 2: Athens & Fly to the Greek Islands

After spending a day exploring Athens, it’s time to fly to the Greek islands. Spend some more time exploring then take an afternoon flight from Athens to Mykonos. Mykonos is known for its picturesque white-washed buildings and narrow winding streets but also its beaches and night clubs.. Two of the best beach clubs in Mykonos are Super Paradise and Paradise.

Paradise beach you’re going to find a younger crowd and not as many amenities and the beach is not as pretty as super paradise but the prices are cheaper and is still a gorgeous beach. Super paradise is much more relaxing and luxurious the beach is fine sand and the beach chairs are definitely more expensive. They always have a big party on Sundays at super paradise. Whichever you decide on make sure you book a chair ahead of time because they both are known as sold out weeks ahead of time in the summer, Especially in August.

plaka with view of parthenon - dont miss this ultimate 10 day greece itinerary

Days 3-6: Mykonos

During the next four days, you’ll have the opportunity to explore Mykonos in more depth. One of the best ways to do this is by renting an ATV or car and touring the island. Make sure to visit the Windmills of Mykonos, which are a famous landmark of the island.

If you stay at my favorite hotel in Mykonos – Porto hotel, you’re just walking distance from the town of Mykonos and the famous landmarks like the windmills & little Venice.

Mykonos is also known for its vibrant nightlife, so make sure to experience it at least one night during your stay. There are clubs that literally dont start until 1am and go until 6am. My favorite bar in Mykonos is Scandinavian bar – if you are looking for just a fun place to dance that should be your first stop. If you get tired there, just follow where your ear takes you. There are several other bars nearby that you can simply walk into and dance the night away. If you’re looking for a club experience – all of the clubs are on different parts of the island and require a taxi or shuttle to.

milos greece in athens - colorful airbnb houses

Days 4 & 5: The Island of Ios, Greece

Take a ferry to the island of Ios and spend the next two days exploring its ancient ruins and museums. There isn’t an airport on Ios so the ferry is the only way to get there. Ios is known for its beautiful beaches, including Mylopotas and Kalamos. The island is also known for its laid-back atmosphere, making it the perfect place to relax and unwind. Ios is another great island for partying and beaches – but at the FRACTION of the cost of Mykonos. After you’ve burnt through more then you expected in Mykonos you’ll enjoy a much smaller bill in Ios for your hotels, food and ATV rentals.
This is another great island for an ATV rental but be sure to book it WAY in advance.

Days 6 & 7: Milos Greece

Take a ferry to the island of Milos and spend the next two days exploring its unique geology and natural beauty. You HAVE to book a day in Milos, it takes you to parts of the island you cant see without getting on a boat. I absolutely LOVE this particular tour in Milos.

Also make sure to visit the famous Sarakiniko Beach, which is known for its white, volcanic rock formations. Pack plenty of snacks and drinks as you’re going to want to stay way longer then you thing. If you don’t rent an ATV then you can take a taxi out there, just be sure to get the taxi # so you can call them to come pick you up afterwards.

There is 1 taxi stand in Milos – the phone number goes to a landline phone in the center of town and the drivers all hang out there waiting for people to call so don’t be surprised if you call for a taxi and they say it’ll take them 15 minute to get there. Taxis in Milos only accept cash too so be sure you have euros on you. There are several ATM’s in town if you are running low at this point.

I personally love staying at Santa Maria Village – they are very nice, breakfast is nice, as is their pool and its a short walk into town too. They’ll even set up transfers to the port for you if you have too much luggage to walk with.

Days 8-10: Zakynthos Greece

Take a ferry to the island of Zakynthos, my FAVORITE PLACE is all of Greece and spend the final three days of your Greek adventure exploring its natural beauty and crystal-clear waters. Make sure to visit the famous Shipwreck Beach, which is one of the most popular tourist destinations on the island. After exploring the island, it’s time to relax and enjoy the laid-back atmosphere of Zakynthos.

Final Thoughts I have about 10 Days in Greece

If you’ve read this entire 10 day Greece itinerary and you’re wondering what to cut out – dont cut out Zakynthos. Its one of the best places in all of Greece and everyone I bring there feels the same way I do.

If you’re considering Santorini instead of these islands, I’d only do a 1 day stop at Santorini. Do this to see the blue domes in Santorini. You can take an EARLY morning ferry from Mykonos, drop your luggage at the port (5 euros a bag) and take a taxi/shuttle into IOS for about 6 hours, get your photos and do some shopping then hop on another ferry to Ios. I promise you that Santorini is one of the more overrated islands in Greece. Its nice but there are so many other places with beautiful beaches and towns to explore.

Greece is a country with a rich history and culture, and with a 10-day itinerary, you can explore the best of what the country has to offer. From the ancient ruins of Athens to the stunning beaches of the Greek islands, this itinerary will allow you to experience the best of Greece.

Remember to plan ahead and make sure you have all the necessary documents and information for your trip, including an international driver’s license if you plan to rent a car or ATV. And most importantly, be prepared to relax and enjoy all that Greece has to offer.

The Top 20 Must-Have Travel Apps for your Next Adventure

When it comes to planning and taking a vacation, I think we all rely on our phones now more than ever. From Google Maps for trains to just having data to get a ride to the hotel from the airport. This list could probably be “the best 100 travel apps for everyone” but who needs 100 travel apps taking up space on their phone.

So from the apps that help with everything from day-of hotel bookings and last-minute flight changes to those that serve as guidebooks and foreign-language dictionaries – this is my list of what I think are the top 20 best travel apps for every traveler.

Best Apps for Researching Your Trip

Hotel Tonight

While Hotel Tonight is now owned by AirBnB (and we’re not fans of them here) its still one my favorite travel apps. I primarily use it to book for same day or next day reservations but you can use it to book further out. The app categorizes available hotel rooms into sections like basic, luxe, hip, charming, and solid, so you can easily select the type of hotel that suits your vibe. Plus, you can take advantage of the daily drop feature, where you can swipe to find personalized deals with special prices that are only valid for 15 minutes after they are unlocked.

I enjoy a good loyalty program so this is one I thought I’d share. You can “level up” by reaching specific spending thresholds on the app, and you’ll gain access to perks like discounts, VIP customer support, and credits. Plus, your levels never expire, so you can continue to move up and access even more benefits. As with all 3rd party apps – tred lightly. I haven’t been burnt by this one “yet” in terms of the hotel not receiving my booking but as it is with booking anything third party – there is always a chance.

Omio

When it comes to booking or finding train and bus tickets – or just figuring out the best way to get from point A to B – the Omio app is my go to. When you know what cities you want to visit but you’re not 100% sure how to get from each destination, Omio shows you the cheapest & fastest options. Its great for trip planning.

Booking.com

I’ll start out by saying that I’ve been burnt by Booking.com in the past. They’ve said I had a reservation for 8 rooms and I get to the hotel and its only 5 rooms. Was I salty? Yes. Do I still use booking.com? Yes… I actually only use it when its me booking 1 room, nothing more then that. That way if I get burnt, its at my own expense. I also typically call ahead and just ask the hotel if they got my reservation.

Booking has fantastic discounts that you cant find on hotel website and they also have a loyalty program that gives you up to 20% off on hotels. My trick is to be sure I pay on the app – I haven’t had any issues (so far) as long as I pay for the reservation ahead of time on the app.

Aside from the 1 issue I’ve had, Ive had over 100 hotel nights booked via Booking.com because they do give such good discounts. Even if you dont want to book with them, its a great website to check reviews out on – you have to have stayed at the hotel to review it so you know they’re authetic and the reviews are often different from what you’ll find on Google Maps.

Kayak

The Kayak App is a favorite because of all the tools. The explore feature that let you input dates or a budget or just a theme and itll give you all the options of places to go from your home airport. Looking for a Beach vacation and dont know when but you know what month? Throw it in the Explore feature and let it do its magic.

Kayak also has a great price alert tool that will shoot you an email when the price of that flight you want comes down to a better level.

I did a whole 2 part Tiktok on Google Flights if you want to check that out – but its not an app!

Best Travel Apps for the Airport

Flight Aware

Looking for the best flight tracking app? Look no further than FlightAware. With this app, you can easily track flights online, check for delays, see cancellations, gate changes and see a live map of the flight. Whether you have a tight connection or want to track your own flight, FlightAware is literally the best. Plus, it’s great for picking up friends and family at the airport, as you can track their flights and see updated landing times or delays.

Priority Pass

Priority pass is great for lounge access – especially if you dont fly business or first class very often. Several cards, including The Platinum Card® from American Express, the Capital One Venture X and the Chase Sapphire Reserve, offer Priority Pass memberships for all cardholders (enrollment required). Priority Pass offers access to over 1,300 lounges worldwide and provides meal vouchers at select airport restaurants. If you don’t have one of these cards, you’ll have to pay an annual fee to become a member. Depending on your membership tier, a fee to enter each lounge on top of the annual fee.

To use the Priority Pass app, simply enter the name or code of the airport you’re in and the app will show you the lounges and restaurants that you have access to, including photos, hours, amenities, and specific location information. For more information on the Priority Pass Program and how to gain lounge access, click here.

Lounge Buddy

Lounge buddy is fantastic for finding and accessing airport lounges around the world. This is regardless of what airline you’re flying or even if you’re flying business vs economy. You can create a trip in their app and they it will tel you what lounges you can access in the airports you’re flying through. If you don’t already have access to the lounges it’ll tell you exactly how you can purchase it too.

You don’t have to wait until the day of your flight to purchase access either – you can check your flights up to 2 months ahead of time!

best travel apps to plan your trip adventuring for life

Best Travel Apps to Plan your Trip

Viator

Viator is probably one of my favorite travel apps to book excursions through. I appreciate the review system and their app even gives you 10% off your first 3 bookings through Viator (vs the website). Its my first place to check when i want to find a company that offers excursions like snorkeling or boat trips.

Get your Guide

Get your Guide is very similar to Viator. Its one of my favorite places to look for activities. It helps me plan what I want to do in an area plus offers tours and local guided experiences when I want to see something but want a local to help me get their or provide more knowledge. Especially when it comes to learning more history about a city or a place – Viator & Get your Guide are always my two places to check.

Trip Advisor

TripAdvisor is a fantastic app that offers a range of services for travelers. You can read reviews of restaurants, hotels, and attractions, or book almost anything related to travel on the app.

You can search by destination or even by interest on Trip Advisor which can provide inspiration for your trip or help you to organize your activities, meals, and accommodations before or during your travels. With TripAdvisor, you can easily book vacation rentals, restaurant reservations, tours, and tickets all in one place.

Open Table

Open Table is great for making dinner reservations. This app is quite popular so it might come as a no-brainer that its super useful to use for travel. I even use it to check out reviews or just places around me to eat in a specific cuisine when Im not quite sure whats nearby.

The Fork

Very Similar to Open Table – The Fork is one of the best international travel apps for making restaurant reservations in Europe. Like OpenTable, you can browse different restaurants by category and make reservations directly on the app.

TheFork has more than 60,000 restaurants in cities like London, Athens, and Rome, as well as outside of Europe in places like Sydney, Australia. The biggest perk is that many restaurant reservations come with discounts – sometimes up to 50% off your meal – just by reserving a table through TheFork.

Foodie travelers should also consider downloading TheFork to earn YUMS, their reward system. You’ll earn YUMS with each reservation, and when you hit 1,000, you’ll receive a discount on your bill.

kangaroos on the beach best apps to travel with

Best Travel Apps to use when you land

Airalo

What do I do about data? Thats always a question people have when they travel. Airalo takes away the guessing game. Instead of getting a new sim card every country you travel to or paying $10/day for your international data plan, Airalo has e-sim cards you can install on your phone to give you data as soon as you land in the new country.

You can use my code to save $3 on your first purchase too with my code RACHEL965. I make a tiny commission when you use it but I have 10 different e-sim cards from them on my phone if that says anything about the recommendation.

XE – Currency Converter

XE is something you definitely need for international travel. Id consider it one of the best international travel apps for a new traveler. Its a Currency Converter – so when you need to do the math real quick on a bill the XE app can do that for you. Its free and there are occasionally ads but I just skip them.

Google Maps

Google Maps is in my top 5 must-have apps for any traveler. With real-time GPS navigation, you can easily find your way to your destination, whether you’re walking, driving, or using public transportation. Skip Apple maps when you travel anywhere. Google maps is one of the best apps because you can also search for nearby points of interest, such as restaurants, hotels, and attractions, and get detailed information about each place, including ratings and reviews from other users. Plus, you can save your favorite places and create custom maps to share with friends and family. With Google Maps, you’ll always know where you’re going and what to do when you get there.

City Mapper

City Mapper is my next stop after Google Maps. Its super useful in finding the best routes and step by step instructions on how to find the nearest train or bus station. Similar to google maps you can see the next arrivals are and real time information so you get updates regularly.

Google Translate

Find yourself in a country where you dont speak the language? Google Translate is great for translating signs & menus. Its also great for typing things in your language and it’ll translate them for you & even say it out loud if you dont feel confident in the pronunciation. I also always download the language in the app for the country that I’m in – just in case I find myself somewhere with zero service, I’m lost & no one speaks english. From experience – you should never travel without it.

Uber

Most people already use Uber at home but most destinations world wide have Uber too. I’ve used it to connect to Taxis in Greece and take Ubers around South Africa. They even have a safety setting in Uber that allows you to make the driver type in a 4 digit code that you give them to ensure that you are getting into the right Uber! This is super useful in countries like Egypt where all the car plates are in Arabic.

So grab your bag and join us for a journey through the best of Athens! I’ve had the pleasure of visiting Athens 3 times in the last 2 years so I’m sharing all the information you need in this guide!

Athens is a city with a rich history and culture that spans thousands of years. While it would be ideal to spend more than a day exploring all that the city has to offer, for many travelers, time is limited. If you find yourself with only one day in Athens, don’t worry, it is still possible to see the highlights and make the most of your time with a well-planned itinerary.

Hotels in Athens

I’ve stayed at several different hotels in Athens and my FAVORITE by far is The Athens Gate Hotel. The service, staff, location, view from the rooftop, and breakfast all make it superior to anywhere else I’ve stayed. Its very close to the Parthenon, several really good restaurants, Plaka, and even the metro if you are taking it to or from the airport!

24 Hours in Athens

The Acropolis and Parthenon are the most iconic and recognizable landmarks in Athens. No visit to the city is complete without a visit to the Acropolis, an ancient citadel that sits high above the city. The Parthenon, a temple dedicated to the goddess Athena, is the most famous structure on the Acropolis. The Acropolis is open from 8 am to 7 pm during the summer months and until 5 pm during the winter months. I would highly recommend starting here when you visit.

Be sure to your combined ticket ahead of time online for the slopes and all the different sites because next you’re headed to the Ancient Agora, a public square in the heart of Athens that was the center of political, commercial, and social activity in ancient times.

When you need a break from all the history and culture, take a stroll through the Plaka neighborhood. This charming neighborhood is known for its traditional Greek architecture, shops, and taverns. It’s the perfect place to grab a bite to eat and experience local life.

Food in Greece

Finally, no trip to Athens would be complete without trying some traditional Greek food. The city is famous for its delicious seafood, souvlaki, and moussaka. Make sure to leave enough time to enjoy a meal at a local taverna.

Zorbas in Plaka has excellent food and their staff is very kind. I also love the gyros from Tylixto.  Solo Gelato is one of my favorite Gelato stops in Athens, theyve won awards before! The restaurants on the plaka stairs are fun and several have rooftops you can see sunset from too.

You  can expect to find a wide variety of fresh seafood, grilled meats, and delicious vegetables. One of the most popular dishes in Athens is souvlaki, which is a type of Greek kebab made with marinated meat (usually pork, chicken or beef) and served in a pita bread with tomato, onion, and tzatziki sauce. Another must-try dish is moussaka, a traditional Greek casserole made with layers of eggplant, ground meat, and a creamy béchamel sauce. The Greek salad (Horiatiki) is also a staple and a must-try, made with tomatoes, cucumbers, onions, feta cheese, and dressed with olive oil and oregano. Additionally, Athens is known for its delicious seafood and visitors can find a wide variety of fish and shellfish dishes at the city’s many tavernas and seafood restaurants.

Shopping in Athens

Shopping in Athens is a must – you’re going to find the best prices on all the things when you’re here vs on the islands. I always recommend people shopping in Athens over shopping on Mykonos or Santorini.

Some of my other favorite places to visit when I’m in Athens include Little Kook – even if you’re not in a dessert mood, just walking through there is a fun time! Brettos is a fun bar that you’ve also probably seen all over social media. And if you’re into souvenirs – you can get leather sandals made by a local in Athens too!

Athens can sometimes be overwhelming for first-time visitors, but with a well-planned itinerary, it’s possible to see the highlights and make the most of your time in the city. We recommend visiting the Acropolis, Ancient Agora, and National Archaeological Museum in the morning, and then taking the afternoon to explore the Plaka and try some traditional Greek food.

Keep in mind that Athens can be hot during the summer months, so make sure to stay hydrated and wear comfortable shoes. The city is also quite hilly, so be prepared for a lot of walking. I always wear my croc sandals when I go – YES I walk 20k steps in these shoes and I absolutely love them.

Athens is a city that has so much to offer, and even if you have just one day to spend there, you can still experience its history, culture, and local life. With a well-planned itinerary, you can make the most of your time and create unforgettable memories. After your very well planned day in Athens, fly or ferry to the islands – be sure to check out Milos & Ios. They are two of my favorites!

Day Trip Vs Staying a few Days in Nusa Penida

There’s no shortage of things to do on the Indonesian island of Nusa Penida. From diving and snorkeling in the crystal-clear waters to hiking up ancient temples, there’s something for everyone. Which makes you probably trying to decide if you want to take a Nusa Penida Day Trip or Stay a few days!

Nusa Penida is stunning with its dramatic cliffs, secluded beaches, and lush jungle scenery. I’ve been to Bali and currently am planning a second trip – this time we’re planning it a bit differently and you get to learn from my mistakes so your trip is even better.

How do I get to Nusa Penida?

Nusa Penida is a beautiful island off the coast of Bali. You’ll want to fly to the DPS airport in Bali then plan on your trip from there! If you still haven’t booked your flights to Bali yet you should go set price alerts through my favorite site Kayak.com – their price alert tools are fantastic because they email you once the price has hit the point where you should buy!

Things to do on Nusa Penida

One of the most popular activities on Nusa Penida is diving and snorkeling. The island is home to some of the best dive sites in the world, including Manta Point and Crystal Bay. The waters are teeming with colorful fish, turtles, and other marine life, making for an unforgettable underwater experience. If you’re not a certified diver, don’t worry – there are plenty of Snorkeling spots that are just as beautiful. When we visited Nusa Penida

For those looking for a bit of adventure, there’s no shortage of hiking trails on Nusa Penida. Head to Kelingking Beach for stunning views of the cliffs, or trek up to the ancient Pura Dalem temple for a glimpse into the island’s history. For an even more challenges hike, make your way to Atuh Beach – considered one of the most difficult hikes on the island. But trust us, it’s worth it for the incredible views at the end

No matter what your interests are, you’re sure to find plenty of things to do on Nusa Penida. From diving and snorkeling to hiking and exploring ancient temples, this Indonesian island has something for everyone. So start planning your trip today – you won’t regret it!

The Best Day Trip to Nusa Penida

A day trip to Nusa Penida is a great way to see the island without having to stay overnight, especially if your list of places to see on the mainland of Bali is extensive. You can see A LOT in a Day especially if you pick a tour that combines a boating tour with a land tour. There are a ton of tours but This 5-Star Full Day Tour on Viator.com is an actual private tour so you’ll have the whole boat & car for your group! They have options for shared space at a lower price too. The company is excellent and takes great care of you plus if you are looking for a second opinion – check out their reviews! They have literally ALL 5 Star Reviews!

Expect to be out the door by about 6:30am when you take a day trip to Nusa Penida then down to the docks by 7:30am and at your first snorkel spot by 9am. It’ll be a full day but a FUN one. Snorkeling with Manta Rays was one of the highlights of our trip.

Planning the Best Day Trip to Nusa Penida

If you plan a tour other then the one I suggested above there are a few things you should keep in mind before you go! First, take note of the tides. Nusa Penida is known for its dramatic cliffs, and during high tide, some of the viewing areas may be inaccessible. Make sure to check the tide schedule in advance and plan your trip accordingly.

Regardless of the tour you pick – pack plenty of sunscreen and water. There is little shade on the island, so you’ll want to make sure you stay hydrated and protected from the sun. Finally, be prepared for some crowds. Nusa Penida is becoming increasingly popular with tourists, so certain areas may be quite crowded. However, if you’re willing to venture off the beaten path, you can find plenty of quiet spots to enjoy the island’s natural beauty.

If you’re in Bali for 7-8 Nights then I think a day trip is PERFECT – more then 8 nights? Maybe a lot 2 of your nights to an overnight stay on the island. Otherwise, enjoy your busy day trip and all the fantastic view points.

Stay a few Nights in Nusa Penida – If you Can!

There are plenty of reasons to visit the Indonesian island of Nusa Penida on just a day trip – but if time allows, you should definitely stay for a few nights rather than just doing a day trip. Here are three reasons why:

First, Nusa Penida is home to some truly stunning scenery, from towering cliffs and pristine beaches to lush forests and Crystal clear waters. If you want to make the most of your time on the island, you’ll need more than just a few hours to explore all it has to offer.

Second, there’s more to Nusa Penida than just its natural beauty. The island is also home to a number of unique cultural experiences, from traditional dances and ceremonies to delicious local cuisine. Spending a few nights on Nusa Penida will give you a chance to really immerse yourself in the Island’s culture.Staying on Nusa Penida will allow you to really relax and unwind. With so much to see and do, day trips can be quite rushed at times. If you give yourself a few days, you can really take your time and enjoy everything that this special place has to offer.

Where to eat on Nusa Penida

The food scene on Nusa while good is limited. I think we ate at all the “popular” spots we found on different internet websites during our 3 day stay. I loved them all and definitely recommend them.

Green Kubu is the most popular restaurant and it has a fantastic viewpoint for sunset too. I highly recommend reservations for this place if you’re going at dinner.

Amok Sunset is a nice place with a decent happy hour. They have actually also have a pool and some spectacular views plus these tree houses that you can reserve for dinner too!

If its brunch you desire then definitely check out Penida Colada or The Chill Penida. I’ve eaten at both and they’re delicious!

Obviously this is above and beyond just eating at a Warung if you’re looking for local food too. There are a ton of Warungs (local eateries) on Nusa Penida too.

Where to stay in Nusa Penida

If you decide to stay, I recommend 2 nights at most – more then this and you might find yourself looking for things to do. We stayed at Semabu Hills Hotel and absolutely loved it. Everyday breakfast was delicious and they even had a shuttle service from the beach up to the hotel once our ferry landed.

How do I get to Nusa Penida if Im staying 2 Nights?

Thats probably your next question! Take a ferry from Sanur. I highly recommend not taking all your luggage, if you have that luxury. If your hotel on the mainland will store your luggage for you while you visit then just bring a duffle. Why? Well, the landings for the ferry are wet landings – there are no docks involved, just sand and water. Rolling a big 22KG/50lb suitcase through sand at the beach is not something I’d ever recommend and I wish I had known this before we went. I would have arranged luggage storage, you live and you learn though!

Bali is stunning – gorgeous and home to MANY Travel bloggers sharing their experiences. Before my first visit I think I read 50 blogs and some of the things were so repetitive that I thought “Ok I have to do that” then I did it and well. Lets say I was underwhelmed. So without further ado – heres my list of things that I did in Bali and wouldn’t recommend to anyone else.

Visit Uluwatu Temple

Uluwatu Temple is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Bali. The temple is located on a cliff that offers a stunning view of the ocean. In addition to the breathtaking views, you can also watch the famous Kecak dance performance at the temple. The dance tells the story of Ramayana and is an experience you won’t want to miss. Heres the thing though. I found it INCREDIBLY Boring. If you don’t buy your tickets online for the first showing you’ll be going to the second showing. It was FULL of tour buses full of people and I felt like I was in a tourist trap. The monkeys at this temple are incredibly aggressive and while sunset might be fantastic – I think we wasted our time here. If you’re staying in Uluwatu then sure maybe – it just wasnt for us. The “fire” part was lack luster in my humble opinion & I saw so many other temples that were SO much nicer. I think next time I am going to check out a fire kecak in Ubud (Im going in September 2023 if you want to join) and I’ll report back if I found a better option.

Ride a Motor Bike / Scooter

Well – I think you’ve probably read this a million times at this point but the Scooters in Bali are dangerous. Driving in Bali isn’t for the faint of heart. I wouldn’t ride on a motorcycle or scooter in Bali after witnessing the traffic there. Theres too many accidents and so many people riding around without a helmet too. Just order a car off GoJek – its their version of Uber and SO incredibly cheap.

Go ATV Riding

This one comes with an asterisk. While we had a great time ATV Riding in Bali – it was incredibly dangerous. If we were to go again we would check the brakes & the tires and definitely not go after a ton of rain. We had 4 ATV’s and 2 had no brakes so one of us went crashing into the woods at one point and then another we had to push up 2 very muddy hills. I somehow ended up with the only ATV that had zero issues. Funny thing is that when we got back from our ATV ride we saw 4 new ATV’s sitting out front and then put the afternoon group on those new ATV’s! We opt’d to do ATV riding then White Water Rafting to rinse the mud off and had we done it opposite its possible I wouldn’t be writing this exact blog post. So my words are just – BE Cautious. Make sure your brakes work and all the tires have good treed on them. I plan on going again but with a different vendor that Ive spoken with extensively about our experience & how it definitely WILL be better next time I go!

Go For Only a week

You’re probably flying for over 24 hours if you’re coming from any other place other then maybe Australia or other parts of Asia. So you want to make the most of your time over here. Let me tell you – you’re going to get here and just get sucked in. Theres a reason people call this place paradise. If I were planning another trip I would absolutely give myself like 3-4 free days at the end of my trip just with NOTHING planned on them and let me see where the wind takes me. I left with FOMO and regret of not extending my trip. Next time I’m giving myself WAY more time then just the 14 days that I had.

If somehow you found this post without checking out my Top 10 Things EPIC Things to do in Bali – you should go check that out! Its full of things that I did and loved & would happily go do again the next time I visit!
